Pluto – She Makes the Offer You Cannot Refuse

I am starting the New Year with a review of the planets, especially the distant and slow moving ones because they have the deepest effect on our lives. It is important to know where they are in our birth charts because the work we must do in those areas last our life time. It is also vital that we track them as they transit through our charts. Ignoring the calls of these powerful planets not only hinders our growth, it can cause confusion, stifled lives and even illness.

Know your chart – know your transits – know where the universe wants you to move forward.

Pluto – this is the case of the last shall be first. Pluto, now a dwarf planet by astronomical standards, still packs a huge punch in our lives. Pluto, known as Hades to the Greeks, was the god of the underworld. Astrologically, she vibrates to the energy of the eighth house, with domain over death, goods of the dead, rebirth and personal transformative power.
Pluto makes you “an offer you can’t refuse.” More to the point, Pluto requires a death of something. Yes, Pluto requires death – and if you refuse to go deep within yourself and root out what is no longer working – what Pluto wants you to remove – she will force that change and she isn’t always delicate about it.

I recently saw a tragic result of someone ignoring the demands of Pluto as it transited their North Node. The North Node is our soul’s destiny – the new way we need to focus our energy in this lifetime. This person repeatedly refused to embody their North Node of Capricorn in the second house – to have domain over their body and resources – and continued to run away back to their South Node. When Pluto hit that North Node, the calls for change became louder and more urgent but remained unheeded, the person suffered a catastrophic fall. Now they are facing months and years of rehabilitation to hopefully walk and be independent again. Pluto forced the issue of caring for body and resources as only she can.

As I said Pluto requires death of some kind. Here is a quick review by house of changes and death required:
Pluto in the first house – old, destructive or unproductive personal habits;
Pluto in the second house – misuse of money, material goods, the wrong “value system”
Pluto in the third house – unproductive or destructive relationships with siblings, friends and people in your local community
Pluto in the fourth house – incorrect images of who you are, family “tapes” in your head, problems with parents
Pluto in the fifth house – sexual dysfunction, creative blockages – false expressions of your inner spark.
Pluto in the sixth house – poor eating habits, habits that hurt the body and bad work habits or a job (not career) that blocks instead of enhances you
Pluto in the seventh house- dysfunctional partnerships either marital or business related
Pluto in the eighth house – blockages to expressing your personal power, misuse of inheritances and because, Pluto vibrates to this house of death and rebirth, you may lose someone in your life –
Pluto in the ninth house- educational limitations, blockages that permit you to grow spiritually and morally and growing your soul
Pluto in the tenth house – career blockages, limitations that keep your “light under the proverbial bushel” and keep you from making an impact on your society
Pluto in the eleventh house – social connections or groups that no longer serve you – toxic social relations that only serve to speak to your “demons”
Pluto in the twelfth house – misguided or no longer valuable connections to God, feelings of being lost in a larger system.

KNOW WHAT HOUSE PLUTO IS IN YOUR CHART RIGHT NOW – AND DO THE WORK NECESSARY TO CLEAR OUT THE DETRITUS THAT NO LONGER SERVICES YOU. DON’T MAKE PLUTO DO IT FOR YOU.

Work with Pluto – don’t make Pluto do the work for you because she can be merciless.

Snowing in the Zodiac

Today we are in Zodiac Land during a huge blizzard. Your intrepid reporter is visiting the various signs to see how they are coping with the snow.

Ah, there is Mr. Aries, the Ram. I can tell it is he by the gleam coming off his warrior armor. “Excuse me, Mr. Aries. Oh I see there is not a lick of snow on your property. How did you get rid of three feet of snow while it is still falling?”

I have to jump back as Aries swings around wielding his flame thrower. “I torched it all away – gone, gone – It is annihilated! All encumbrances must be out of my way immediately so my precious freedom is preserved. Freedom is so much more than nothing else to loose – it is all – it is power – it is MINE!”

“OK Aries – cool it with the blowtorch you are getting a bit carried away. Didn’t all of that snow torching cause a flood in your neighbor’s yard?”

“And your point is?”

I try to continue the conversation but Aries has found a small mound of ice that did not yield to his earlier torching and jumps on it with wild abandon. In the distance I see Ms. Taurus the Bull looking quite out of sorts.
“What is happening Taurus?”

“Oh this is so dreadful. Look at what that awful snow did to my lovely pasture. It is so cold on my feet and it takes so much effort to dig out a little spot. Then I will have to carry wood to make a fire. Effort, effort – so unpleasant. However, look what I found!”

She brightens as she displays a long scarf and matching booty set.

“This makes it so much more palatable. Feel the softness of this material. I love soft.”
Taurus begins to wrap herself in the scarf.

“Taurus, Taurus! Stop you are knocking over… Taurus! Don’t you have to bring in the wood?”

She can’t hear me as she literally rolls away, just a huge blur of comfortable material. In her path is Mr. Gemini who is fortunately fast enough to avoid the whirling Bull.

“Snow, snow, snow. Snow can’t stop me – see I have read fifteen books since it started. See – look at my books – and letters – I wrote my entire family ten letters. No snow will stop me – nothing will. Must gather, must disseminate information. Oh, what if the mail doesn’t come? How will I get the letters out? I will run through the snow in my golden boots and have Mercury light my path. Yes, that is what I will do. Must run – must…”

In a flash Gemini is gone – but I follow the path he blazed in the snow to arrive at Ms. Cancer’s home. Her always well-appointed cottage has a roaring fire going and as soon as I open the door the smell of chocolate chip cookies surrounds me. It is no wonder. I see that she has already baked 15 dozen.

“Cookie, dear? Oh and let me fix you some steaming tea. Come sit by the fire and let me wrap you in the blanket I just made. Are you warm? Are you sure? Really? Anything else I can get for you? Sure?”

I thank her for her generosity which is difficult because she is cramming more cookies in my face.

“The snow makes me so emotional. I just want to sit by the window and knit sweaters for all the little creatures in the forest. It kills me that I can’t make the entire world warm.”

Ms. Cancer begins to weep and runs into her room in typical Cancer the Crab style. After attempting her to get out of her “shell” several times I grab a few cookies and move on. She will get over it, she just needs her time alone.
“Come here and look at me!” I know I am in the land of Leo the Lion.

“Hello Leo. How are you coping with the storm?”

“I love it – the reflection from the snow does show me at my ultimate beauty don’t you think? I could just look at myself for hours in this light. It does such wonders for my complexion. Aren’t you lucky to be seeing me at my best?”

“Ah, I guess so. You have a remarkably well plowed driveway. Who did it?”

Mr. Leo tries to remember a name but it is futile. “Someone. People are so lucky to do for me. However, you must leave me as it is time for my ice rub – it is an exclusive process known only to a few and just does wonders for my skin. It will make me all the more handsome if you can believe it.”

I guess I have to believe it, Leo will have it no other way. As I turn to leave his palace, I come across Ms. Virgo slogging through the snow, carrying a huge load of wood planks and looking quite upset. “What is the matter Ms. Virgo?”

“Oh my poor little vegetable garden. I built a cold frame for winter but as usual I didn’t do a good enough job, because well do I ever? Now the storm is making all the vegetables freeze and I am trying to reinforce the frame. Oh stupid me – I fail again. What else is new?”

“Come one Virgo, you aren’t that bad. This is a terrible, freak storm and it came up quickly. Don’t blame yourself.”

“Well who can I blame then? I never reach perfection. I try and try and always fall short just like I fell short supporting my little veggies.”

Try as I might I can’t convince Virgo that no one is perfect and to take a moment to stop working and enjoy the beauty of the snow. I leave her muttering a list of self-imperfections.

“Are you coming to the party?” Mr. Libra startles me.

“Party in this weather?”

“Of course, a snow party. You know I excel at relating with people and love nothing more than to entertain. Was that Virgo over there looking glum again? I do so worry about Virgo and do my best to snap her out of her doldrums. I should do more, more, more. I can never help enough you know.”

Having a conversation with those air signs is such a chore. Finally I can break in.

“Libra, you can’t fix the whole world. Everyone has their own path.”

Libra’s face has that dazed look he always gets when someone tries to explain co-dependence. “Really, you can’t live someone else’s life.”

Libra is deflating. “Yes, whatever. Ah, do come over for the party though. I made the best dumplings. They are perfect party food because you can eat and talk and relate – we all must relate to one another you know.”

I leave Libra and set out on a hunt for Scorpio. This is never easy – particularly in a storm. No one can burrow like Scorpio. Eventually I find the entrance to her house.

“Scorpio, are you home?”

“Of course I am home and in my bed. ACK – shut the door! I hate the bright light from the snow. Is it is still snowing? I do love storms – I can stay in bed, read, write and binge watch bloody movies. You aren’t staying too long are you? Of course, you aren’t.”

“Ah no – ouch!” I always forget how dark it is in Scorpio’s cave. “So I gather you aren’t going to Libra’s party.”
Scorpio shoots me a look so withering it takes the breath out me. I have my answer. Try as I might I can’t engage Scorpio in conversation as she is too wrapped up in her movies and her alone time. I sneak out only to hear her screech when I open the door and allow the light in again.

“Really, you are wearing that coat? It makes you look like a cow.” Yes, I am in the land of Mr. Sagittarius, the Archer who aims his arrow at the truth and brings it down home hard no matter the consequences. Of course, the truth is always his truth as no one else’s really matters.

“Gee thanks. How are you dealing with the storm?”

“Perfectly. I know exactly how to handle myself in all-weather situations. You do know that I know everything about everything.”

“You have told me…a few times”

Sagittarius has a satisfied, knowing look on his face as he turns back into his house. “Do you want to see my research library? There is no better in the world.”

I decline as I need to get to Ms. Capricorn before travel gets even more treacherous. “Oh Capricorn. I hope she has fixed her hair finally I told her it looked like a rat trap.”

I did not share Sagittarius’ comments with Ms. Capricorn as she is so prone to despondency anyway. Besides, she looks upset and is pacing, pacing, pacing.

“Capricorn, what is the matter?”

“I am trapped. Even with my goat power I can’t push the snow away and it has trapped me! I can’t accomplish anything. I have to do something – be of some utilitarian service. I have to…”

“OK OK but no one expects you to do your normal yeoman’s work in a blizzard. Maybe you should relax and take a day for yourself.”

Capricorn blanches. “No one expects – but I expect – I have to carry the load – I have to do it all or what good am I?”

“People will like you for who you are even if you don’t work yourself to death – really – trust me.” I see it is of no use. Capricorn is sharpening her goat horns in another attempt to pierce the ice and snow so that she can get back to work.

I am not too far into the land of Aquarius when I am wacked with a snowball. Aquarius puts down his book on advanced quantum physics to reveal a sneaky look on his face.

“Thanks Aquarius, you just love to show your many goofy sides don’t you? I mean the Water Bearer who is also an Air sign, a Brainiac who can be a little brat. You have it all don’t you?”

Aquarius grins and admits that he likes to shake things up. Actually I prefer the snow ball to the conversation that ensues as Aquarius drones on about the physics of snow. “Hey, all of that is interesting,” I lie, “But what about how you feel when you see the snow fall? What does your heart say?” Aquarius freezes and not because it is cold. I said the word he hates the most – heart.

“You have to get out of your head and stop playing these avoidance games. Go feel the snow with your heart and soul.” I went too far – Aquarius is stunned. Going into his heart is too scary and he runs inside his head and back into his book.

“Wee whoopee – ya hooo.” The exclamations of joy are coming from Ms. Pisces – the Fish, who is having a wonderful time escaping into the fun of the snow. “I feel like I am riding the waves of ocean again.”

I ask her how a water sign – the Fish – can enjoy being in such a cold atmosphere.

“Oh but look at the hours of fun I can have here escaping all the horrors of the world. Any form of escape is wonderful and I can explore the mystical beauty of each snowflake. I can spend hours communing with the spirit of the snow in this world of perfection. It reminds of my days when I was a spiritual creature unencumbered by body. Ah snow….”

Pisces takes off – giggling and catching snowflakes on her tongue. Suddenly a huge flash in the distance startles me. It is Mr. Aries again seeking out the last renegade flake with his flame thrower. That is my cue to leave – I have come full circle. I am confident that somehow, in their own way, each sign will find a way to weather the storm, hopefully.

Stay warm.

A Good Time to Reorganize Your Thoughts

Is it time to restructure your thought process? Really, do you have old tapes running in your head – perhaps from childhood – that serve no purpose but to make you feel terrible? Do you need to stop the chorus that beats up on you for every mistake, real and perceived that you have made? Now is the time to do it.
This week retrograded Mercury, already a herald of a time to rework our thoughts, will be coming close to the orbit of Pluto. Pluto, is the change element of the zodiac and requires us to go deep within ourselves to remove the detritus that blocks our progress. This week we will have two strong elements pulling us inward.

Here are some points to consider during this time of assessment:
-Those old tapes that we use to beat ourselves with – why do they still run?
-Do you think before you act or vice versa? How can you get better control over the mind-speaking process?
-What words do you need to say that remain bottled inside you? Why does the blockage remain?

Think about how you can utilize this time to improve all of your expressions, thoughts and intellectual processes.

Getting the Most Out Of Our January Retrogrades

OK our time of direct action is over. This week both Jupiter and Mercury will turn retrograde.  Here is a little Mercury tidbit for you. Mercury is going retrograde now because he is having a New Year as well. A year on Mercury is only 88 days because he is so speedy and close to the Sun, so during his normal three retrogrades a year he “loses” 21 of our days. Anyway, this is the time of take stock of your words, your appointments, your travel plans, and your inner thoughts.  Are they disconnects between your thoughts and words? Do you speak your truth of hide behind the masks of lies? Do you mean what you say and say what you mean, as the old saying goes?

Jupiter, being larger and slower will be in retrograde until May 9. I am afraid he will bring out the more fundamentalist beliefs from zealots and, with his squaring of Uranus on and off all year – we need to be on our toes for some deep seated nonsense surfacing. The best use of a Jupiter retrograde is to pull inside and examine our beliefs. Why do we know what we know – what is the basis for our belief systems on the bigger issues of life? Prepare yourself now for the ability to come out of the gate in May ready to learn, explore and expand your philosophies.

All retrogrades are time for inward growth. Don’t waste these two opportunities.

A Yule Poem – When All Planets Are in Direct Motion

Here is a lovely Yule poem that I found on Angelfire.com. The author is Zephyr Lioness.  Whatever you celebrate, have a wonderful holiday season.

Time of deepest darkness
The God is born anew
Seedling in the frozen earth
Awaiting springtime dew.

The ground, an icy wasteland,
Though neighbors hearts are warm
We share our goods with everyone
So no one comes to harm.

Snow lies on her shoulders
Frosted mantle for her hair
Winter’s Queen is giving birth
The Goddess, always there

The sun is growing brighter.
It happens every year
Promising return of light
For sod and oak and deer

A Week of All Planets in Direct Motion Dec 25 – Jan 6

I am not a big fan of those who believe that every movement of the planets effect every person. Just because Saturn and Pluto might be doing a universal tango does not mean that every person is going to feel it or there will be universal repercussions resounding at every turn. Astrology is very personal. It is important to know what is happening in your chart and correlate the movement of the planets in relationship to that. Broad and bold astrological statements are just too vague.

moon

There is a fair amount of hysteria and hyperbole in the astrological world now because from Dec 25 – January 6 no planets will be in retrograde. A planet is in retrograde when, from our perspective on Earth, they appear to be moving backwards. When born when a planet is in retrograde, one has to experience a balancing of karmic energy. For example, if Saturn is retrograded the person will have underused or overused their connection to authority in a past life and now must learn to handle that challenge better. It is neither reward nor punishment, just learning.

I speak from personal experience when I say that having no retrogrades in your birth chart, while being a little leg up because you don’t have to work on that left over karma, does not guarantee a hassle free life. It is a bonus card, it is not a get out of jail free one. One client of mine is also retro-free and yet faces several painful and lingering illnesses. As I said, it helps but it isn’t food proof.

On Christmas Day, Uranus, the last of the big planets that have been retrograded, will go direct. From then until January 6, no planets will be retrograded. While this is a nice to have happen around the holidays, it will not usher in a New Year of peace, joy and wonderment. It will, however, give us a good resting point to collect ourselves and do make positive plans for 2016. Think of it as the universes Yule gift to allow us to get our ducks in a row- use it wisely but don’t expect it to change the world.

Uranus and Mars Still at Odds

This month will continue to be unsettled as retrograded Uranus continues to oppose Mars. Uranus is quick, unsettled energy that is almost tricksterish in quality. When pulling against the aggressive energy of Mars it can (depending on your birth chart) anger and even violence.  I am so tired of hearing about shootings in this country but the good news is that Uranus leaves retrograde on Christmas Day and that should help. However, it will continue the dangerous dance with Mars well into the New Year.

Saturn and Jupiter

A Personal Story of the Unsettling Energy of Uranus

Oh Uranus, you jokester, you surely got me. Indulge me in a personal story of how Uranus can throw his lightning bolt into your life and what you can do about it. Uranus energy in astrology is quick change that shakes you up and then leaves you wondering what the heck happened. The lesson he sometimes painfully teaches is that we must look at an aspect of life that we would rather avoid.  Of course, you have to figure out what was lost, what value it was to you and why you no longer need it.

For the past several years Uranus has been sliding through my sixth house, the house of healing and caring for the body and our day to day work habits. When these slower moving bodies enter and exit a house, they pack a wallop. It is as though they are saying a hello and a goodbye in a way that you won’t forget them.

This is how Uranus said goodbye to me.  Last week, shortly after leaving a local department store, a man carrying his small child and a large box came barreling out of another store and just slammed into me full speed ahead. Although I went flying and suffered some painful bruises and pulls, I escaped damage to important things like my head and teeth. After feeling grateful that things were not worse, I said a silent “gee thanks “to Uranus.

That accident had Uranus’ fingerprints all over it because it was sudden, totally unexpected and forced me to focus on issues I would prefer not to dwell on, such as impending old age and youthful anxiety. That this happened weeks after my 60th birthday made me think about broken bones and hips and general aging. Was I getting really older, was I becoming someone who had to “watch out” in case I fell? No one wants to think of their body as becoming frail and I always pushed those ideas out of my head because I take care of myself and exercise. This made me think about the possibilities age brings. In the end, I was happy that my body withheld the fall as well as it did. I am not that old after all!

A collision like that can make one fearful especially when they have a history of anxiety and agoraphobia. Indeed, when I went past the same spot a few days later I did feel a bit nervous. This too made me go to areas in my mind I would rather forget but I realized eventually that I would never go back to that person. No matter what, I would always be ready to face the world no matter what it held. I guess I do owe ole’ Uranus some grudging thanks.

Uranus is not always a troublemaker. An infertile woman once asked me if she would ever get pregnant. She was trying In Vitro for the third time when Uranus was about to enter her sixth house. I told her it was now or never and fortunately, lightning struck positively for her. My incident happened when Uranus was still in retrograde so he would pack more of a punch.

It is good to know ahead what Uranus wants you to learn and dig through the painful aspects of the house it is about to enter and leave. It is less annoying, trust me.

Thanksgiving Full Moon

moonWe will be able to go to “grannies house” for Thanksgiving this year by the light of the full Moon. While it will be at its peak on November 25, one day before Thanksgiving, she will still be bright on Thanksgiving.

If you are one who takes a walk after the big meal, look in the sky and she might be visible still even during the day.  In fact, being active might be the right prescription for this day both spiritually and physically.

This is a Gemini Moon because the opposing Sun is in  Sagittarius, this is the Astrological axis of information. Both Gemini and Sagittarius love to exchange knowledge. Gemini is proud of his ability to know a little about a lot and Sagittarius just loves knowing – and telling you what they know! This can make for some interesting Thanksgiving discussions, to say the least.

This Moon will occur a direct Saturn square Neptune (see my post two weeks ago for more information on this.) This is a clash of the authority and known social attitudes (Saturn) and dreamy, spiritual wandering (Neptune.) This is what we used to call a perfect clash of the generation gap; the established versus the young dreamer. As I said, this could be an interesting Thanksgiving around the dinner table!
